Josephine Artlip, 82 of Rapid City passed away on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at a local nursing home.

Josephine was born September 12, 1927 in Fremont, Michigan, the third of ten children to John and Cecil (Wright) Hoppa. She married Robert Artlip on July 19, 1951, and they had four children together. Josephine graduated from Michigan State College with a BA in Home Economics in 1951 and received a Masters degree in Education from Black Hills State College in 1970. She worked for thirty-nine years in education, with positions in Compton, CA and Rapid City, SD before retiring from the Meade County South Dakota School District. Josephine and her family moved to Rapid City from Long Beach, California in 1967, after her husband retired from the U.S. Navy. She had an interest in special education, continuing education, reading, making and selling jewelry with her daughter Sue, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Artlip of Rapid City, two sons, Robert (Wendy) Artlip, Jr. of Bismarck, ND, and Michael Artlip of Arvada, CO, two daughters, Susan (Larry) Pesek of Arvada, CO and Kathryn (Dirk) Schobner of El Paso, TX, six sisters, Margaret Yerkie of Satsuma, AL, Nina (Max) Cheney of Black Duck, MN, Mary (Norton) Sherman of Gladwin, MI, Lena Mosher of Fremont, MI, Shelby (Rick) Foster of White Cloud, MI and Sandy (Doug) Dolan of Apple Valley, CA, two grandchildren, Tyler (Melissa) Artlip and Aleesa Artlip all of Bismarck, ND.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Virginia Strom and Dorothy Ford and one brother, Lloyd Hoppa.

Visitation will be from 5pm to 7pm on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Services will be at 10am on Thursday, March 18 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City.
